Can I get a turkey that was defrosting in sink? ?

I was told to defrost my turkey (11 pounds) in the sink. Just found out it should be done in the refrigerator. I have had it in the sink for about 18 to 20 hours. Can I still eat the turkey once its cooked properly? Moved it to the refrigerator.
