What is the convolution of two square functions, and why?

My mentor told me understand why the convolutions is triangular or something, what does it mean. so for a little more info I'm studying Neuroscience and i guess in order to calculate the rate of fire for a given point in time you need to use a recorded spike train and do an integral transform on it or something! help!
